A “healthy” Curriculum Vitae …

… is accurate and up-to-date

… is often the potential employer’s first impression of you.

… is a snapshot of you, The Professional.

… is an attempt to get you an interview.

… is a professional-looking document – typed or word-processed (or photo copy of same), on white or neutral colored paper.

… is clearly identified as yours, with your name, title, degree, address, phone number, email address (optional), and board status clearly centered at the top.

… is a logically presented summary of

Education: (in chronological order) where you earned your MD, followed by Post Graduate work (including fellowships, residencies, and internships, then Undergraduate education including degree, date, institution.  That’s all.  No high school.  No honors or other embellishments.  

Licenses, Certifications, Awards:  list of relevant certifications, licenses, and awards.

Experience:  (in reverse chronological order) a complete but concise history of what you have done since medical school; explain gaps in work history as study, personal leave or other  sabbatical.

Publications:  optional

 … is not a last minute “document” scratched out on a paper towel, cocktail napkin or other piece of scrap paper, thrown together on the way to an interview.

… is not a “mini-series” that offers your entire life story.

… is not updated by stapling, pasting, taping or handwriting new information to the existing document.

… is not a document that includes information about hobbies, athletic abilities/achievements.

… is not typically more than 3 pages.
